About The Grand Board

What is The Grand Board?

The Grand Board is an independent, informational companion to chess and the classic abstract strategy games — Go, checkers, mancala, and more. We explain how each plays, teach the shared principles, and trace their history.

Do you sell sets or software?

No. The Grand Board is purely informational. We describe the games and how to think in them, but nothing on the site is for sale.

Do I need an account?

Not at all. Everything here is free to read and there's nothing to sign up for — just settle in and study.

Learning the Games

I'm a complete beginner. Where do I start?

Start with the Strategy page. The four principles there — centre, development, looking ahead, and trading — carry across every game on the site. Then pick a game from The Games and read how it plays.

Which game should I learn first?

Chess and checkers are the gentlest on-ramps for most people, with clear goals and widely available sets. Go rewards patience, and mancala is wonderful for quick, tactile play.

Are the strategy principles specific to chess?

No — that's the whole idea. Fighting for the centre, developing before attacking, and trading with purpose apply, in their own way, to nearly every abstract strategy game.

Contributing

Can I suggest a game to add?

Gladly. Use the Contact page to suggest a classic strategy game you'd like profiled, and it may appear in a future update.

Do you cover regional variants?

We describe the major games and their best-known forms. Where a game has famous regional cousins, we mention them so you can explore further on your own.
